Chakra Stones: Base Chakra and Jet

I started a Daily Witchcraft class in March. The aim of the class is to make magic a daily practice and since I had gotten away from my daily practice, I decided this would be a good class for me.

Unfortunately the other 2 people who were going to be in the class had to drop it. But luckily, the teacher, Shen-tat didn’t cancel the class and I get a private lesson every week, which I’m really enjoying so far. I’m not a beginner we can move quickly and take interesting tangents.

Shen-tat gave me a set of chakra stones and each week I am supposed to work with the stones daily. I’ve been instructed to create documents for the stones and I thought it would be nice if I wrote about my experiences working with them on my blog as a quick reference for myself and others who might be interested in learning about the stones.

Base Chakra: Jet

All about Jet

My piece of jet. As you can see, it is opaque

My favorite thing about Jet is it’s physical properties. It’s made from compacted, fossilized wood and is a semi precious stone. True jet will leave a mark when you drag it across a piece of paper. It is associated with the zodiac sign of Capricorn and the root chakra. It is also thought to bring clarity and also good luck in legal matters.

It’s rich in carbon but brittle. One thing I really like about it is that it is so lightweight. It doesn’t feel dense to the touch like other stones. During the Victorian era, it was over mined because it was a popular mourning stone and mining restrictions had to be placed on it.

It also generates electric charge when you rub it.

It has been used as far back as the Neolithic period. The Romans used it for rings and jelwery and it was thought to protect the wearer from the evil eye.

Jet can be cleaned with warm soap and water. You can use the general method of cleansing the stone energetically by burying it in salt for a deep cleanse. You can also use any other method you prefer to use to cleanse your crystals such as moonlight or smudging. .

My Experiences working with Jet

Developing a Daily Ritual Practice

I used working with the base chakra to lay down ritual foundations for a daily practice again.

First I cleanse my home before I start my daily ritual. I find smudging helps me ground and center. I like to use sage bundles but if you have a different method of cleansing the home, do what speaks to you.

Then I would light the candles on my altar, light a little bit of incense and start my work

I started with the base chakra but I’ve been following the same routine as I work through the chakras.

For the Base Chakra, I decided to combined base chakra work with jet. I used the base chakra mandala for my altar and meditated with the stone to the base chakra mantra, LAM. I used the box breath (inhale hold for four count, exhale hold for four count) for ten minutes, focusing on the mandala for the base chakra and holding the jet stone in my right hand. I would let all my concerns, worries or even things I was excited or happy about fall away and come to rest in the moment.

Then I would leave the mantra on and journal.

I’ll dedicate another post to the white/black journaling technique that is an Algard Wiccan technique which I have found useful in helping alchemize my shadows. During my journaling time, I write down the astrological transits of the day, something that I fell out of practice keeping track of when I stopped regularly writing astrology columns.

Then I would do the short ritual techniques that Shen-tat outlined for a daily ritual practice, scan the Zohar, which is a personal practice I am trying to develop, and get ready for bed. It is always a very nice way to end the day and wind down before sleep.

The effects of working with Jet and the Daily Ritual Practice on my Daily Life

I focused on working with Jet and the base chakra the week of the Spring Equinox from March 18, 2026 – March 25, 2026

It was a BUSY week for me. I went to a lot of classes and a lot of rituals. It felt like I was creating a basis for bringing magick back into my life on a daily basis. It was the week of the astrological New Year and it was the perfect time to dedicate this upcoming astrological year to making each day magickal.

I went to I also went to a Spring Equinox celebration with AMORC, my fraternity. I also attended a class at Spiritways to call in job and success magick.

Everything seemed to be moving really fast but I think it was the beginning of the astrological New Year that made me feel that way.

Overview

Jet seems to be a good stone for new beginnings and establishing habits. It helps with grounding and building a firm foundation. If you choose to work with jet, let me know about your experiences in the comments!
